Today, we would like to go on the question of What is the most appropriate elements for me when it comes my rhinoplasty? Should I go with autologous materials? Or choosing other materials?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
Autologous Material
The first thing to know is that autologous material refers to material that is natural, that comes from a specific structure of the body consequently, one of the main benefits of autologous material is that it has the lowest possibility of infection and adapt better to your body.
The choices that you have are :
1) Septal cartilage
- Can be harvested generally just once as it has a s well a very important functional aspect.
- Generally used for primary rhinoplasty
- To have in mind: Asians and African have a small amount of it (which generally make it hard to use) while Middle Eastern people and Caucasian have the right amount of it (which makes it easier to use during the rhino)
2) Ear cartilage
- Cannot be used alone because of his small amount and soft texture. Need to be combined either with silicone or other cartilage
- Generally used for the tip.
3) Rib cartilage
- Highly recommended for revision surgery but can be used for weak, short, or small nose structures during primary rhinoplasty.
- Strong enough to be used alone to create the base structure of the nose.

Synthetic nasal implants
Although some synthetic materials may have a low risk of infection, there may be other cons. With synthetic nasal implants such as Goretex, the tissue grows into the implant. This makes it harder to remove the material if this is the case.
However those materials are really good if you are in search of height for your bridge especially.
1) Silicone implants
- Easy to insert
- Easy to be taken out and change
- Good for more pronounced nose bridge
2) Goretex
- More natural look because of its porous texture
- Not easily removable later in case of problems
