[Nose:Rhinoplasty] Short and Upturned Nose Correction

Upturned (piggy) nose, or foreshortened nose is caused by trauma from birth, or as a side effect of a previous rhinoplasty surgery.


What you need to know about the surgery:


  • procedure period: 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 mins

  • anesthesia: topical or general

  • same day discharge

  • suture removal after 5 to 7 days of surgery

  • recovery period: upto 7 days




Such shape of nose is corrected by using autologous cartilage from the rib, ears, and the nasal septum.


There are three surgical methods for correcting upturned nose:


  • by moving the nose tip cartilage


  • by extending the nasal septum using autologous cartilage from the ears or nasal septum

  • Heightening the nose bridge while correcting the nose tip




You may consider upturned /foreshortened nose correction if you:



  • have upturned (piggy-like) nose

  • have naso-labial angle (the angle between the tip of the nose to the tip of the upper lip) is more than 110 degrees

  • have nostrils that are too revealed from the front

Dr. Kang is a board certified plastic surgeon, who has extensive experience in rhinoplasty from having performed more than hundreds of surgeries. He has a published study, titled " Corrective Rhinoplasty for Deviated Nose a new Osteotomy Technique" , and has collaborated on many academic and medical articles. Dr. Kang is currently an adjunct professor in the department of plastic surgery at Ewha Women's University Medical Center.
